Both of the double-deckers featured this month retain the distinctive yellow and cream of the state-owned Northern Scottish fleet, which until the Scottish Bus Group (SBG) restructure of June 1985 was Alexander (Northern). By 1963, Northern was the only SBG subsidiary not to operate any Bristol Lodekkas, a front-engined double-decker the group liked so much that it exchanged 106 or its 109 rear-engined Bristol VRTs in the early 1970s for Lodekka FLF6Gs from the National Bus Company. Which in a roundabout way is how Northern finally fell into line and gained five FLFs in 1979, its first and last Bristol double-deckers. |
