Xplore Dundee launched the first of its fleet of 12 BYD/Alexander Dennis Enviro400EV battery-electric double-deckers on December 9 for operation on the city's first zero-emission bus route from January once driver training is complete. The £7million investment supports the wider net-zero ambitions of parent company McGill's. The Electric Emerald-branded buses' BYD iron-phosphate batteries deliver a driving range of up to 160miles on a single charge, which meets Xplore Dundee's operational requirements. The early evening launch at the city's Discovery Quay used special lighting effects to emphasise the operator's green livery. They will be used on cross-city service 28 (Myrekirk-Douglas) which serves Lochee Road, the fourth most polluted street in Scotland. Their introduction should further improve air quality in Dundee where the city council already operates more than 150 electric vehicles. Xplore Dundee managing director Christine McGlasson says: "This is a milestone moment for us; we are so proud to bring these electric double-deckers to Dundee, the first of their kind for the city. |
