Asylum seekers in Wales are being offered free travel on buses and trains in a pilot scheme which will gather evidence for a possible permanent scheme. The Welsh Government said the three-month pilot, ending on March 31, would probably operate in Cardiff, Swansea, Newport and Wrexham, which is where most of the asylum seekers in Wales live. People appealing against the rejection of their initial asylum claims would also be eligible. The pilot is intended to provide insights into usage by people with different immigration statuses, as well as the benefits and costs of the facility. The maximum budget for the pilot is £250,000. A government spokesman said: "The Welsh Government believes that integration with communities should begin from day one of arrival in Wales." Free travel would help asylum seekers familiarise themselves with their new surroundings and be more active locally. He said they were not given a choice in housing allocations and received less than £40 per week to live on, while being prohibited from working. Asylum claims took over a year on average to process, and skills and mental health could diminish in that time. |
