The Welsh Government has earmarked £400,000 for free bus travel across Newport in March. The initiative was announced as Buses went to press by Lee Waters, Wales' deputy climate change minister. It coincided with publication of the first annual report of the chair of the Burns Delivery Board, which is overseeing implementation of the Burns Commission's recommendations in November 2020. The Commission was set up to advise the Welsh Government on methods of reducing congestion on the M4 at Newport, without building the £2bn relief road which was cancelled in 2019. The commission recommended a 'network of alternatives,' focused on making better use of rail and bus services. It accepted that the proposed rail investment would take some years to deliver and recommended that, in the meantime, bus improvements be fast-tracked in Newport and the areas to the west and east of the city. The free travel in March follows a separate initiative in December, when Newport council funded free travel for everybody on buses in the city. The council's aim was to encourage residents to stay local when shopping but without driving to the city centre in cars. The initiative was estimated beforehand to cost £308,000. The free travel was available on all operators' services, including Fflecsi demand-responsive routes. |
