Alexander Dennis has delivered the first series-production Enviro500 buses to Berlin municipal, marking the start of a roll-out programme which will bring the German capital's fleet of Alexander Dennis double-deckers to 200. Production has been ramped up at the Alexander Dennis factory in Scarborough to deliver up to five buses per week to Berlin during most of 2022, said the company. The first two production double-deckers are based at the Cicerostrasse depot of Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) in the west of the city and they have appeared only briefly in regular service, notably on the X73 route. The pair join two pre-series models which arrived late last year and have since then undergone minor modifications. Alexander Dennis said it has recruited an experienced local team and invested in office space, a workshop and a parts warehouse in Berlin to help smooth deliveries and support the vehicles in service. The 13.8m Enviros are set to be the final diesel double-deckers for the BVG which is unique among German municipals in remaining loyal to the type. They will gradually replace the fleet's standard three-axle MANs A95s double-deckers of the DL class, many of which have already been withdrawn. Around 130 are still in daily service. The Enviros are also classed as DL, which stands for 'Doppeldecker lang' (long double-decker) in German. They have three doors and two staircases for rapid boarding and alighting. |
