The UK Government has unveiled its levelling up plan, which aims to provide a 'complete system change' of how government works and bring deprived or declining areas back in line with more successful parts of the UK. The announcement set 12 targets to be reached by 2030. The third of these related to public transport. It states: "By 2030, local public transport connectivity across the country will be significantly closer to the standards of London, with improved services, simpler fares and integrated ticketing." Buses has asked how the government will quantify whether this target has been reached, and for more detail on the 'improved services' and 'simpler fares' mentioned. The announcement also stated that by 2030, "every part of England that wants one will have a devolution deal." It was suggested that devolved regions could take advantage of this to move towards 'London-style' transport systems. There was praise for the local leadership of Andy Street in the West Midlands, Ben Houchen in Tees Valley and Andy Burnham in Greater Manchester. |
