Preserved Great Yarmouth Transport 85 (WEX 685M), an ECW-bodied AEC Swift dating from 1973, headed a procession on January 8 to mark First Eastern Counties' retirement of its heritage-liveried Volvo B7TL double-decker, Alexander ALX400-bodied 32059 (W219 XBD). The B7TL, which was painted in Great Yarmouth blue and cream in 2015 with fleetnumber abbreviated to 59, was new to First Leicester in 2000 and has returned to the Midlands for preservation. The ECW factory in Lowestoft built only 22 bodies on the rear-engined Swift chassis, all of them dual-door 11m vehicles for the two municipal undertakings on its doorstep. Ten went to Lowestoft Corporation, while 85 was one of 12 for Great Yarmouth. All had bodies adapted from that produced in far greater numbers on Bristol RELL chassis, the most obvious differences being a plain front dash panel and an offside emergency door; the Yarmouth Swifts had curved windscreens, while those for Lowestoft had flat fronts. The Swift and B7TL were joined in the procession by First's remaining Great Yarmouth heritage double-decker, Wright Eclipse Gemini-bodied Volvo B9TL 37562 (FJ09 FYN), which operates with fleetnumber 62. |
