South Midland Motor Services, the operator of the Oxford-London coach service whose unusual Guy coaches are subject of this month's final Vintage Fenton File, went through several ownership changes. It became part of the Red & White group in October 1945 and with sister company Newbury & District was transferred to the control of Thames Valley Traction in May 1950 when the British Transport Commission acquired Red & White. That left South Midland out on a limb, its 40-coach fleet based 30miles west of Thames Valley's nearest garages in Wycombe. The National Bus Company (NBC) addressed that inconvenience in 1971 by merging South Midland into the former BET-owned City of Oxford Motor Services and rebranding the combined business as Oxford South Midland. City of Oxford was split in two in June 1985 as part of NBC's localisation policy for its southern region subsidiaries. The original company retained the city services and London coach routes, which by then traded as Oxford CityLink, while a new South Midland company served the rest of Oxfordshire. Both businesses were sold to management teams, South Midland in December 1986, City of Oxford in January 1987. |
