The four week strike affecting Arriva's Yorkshire business, which was temporarily suspended on June 30 for a new ballot (Buses August) resumed on July 13, with less than 24 hours' notice. Union Unite stated that the reason for resumption was that "Arriva's management has gone out of its way to destroy any goodwill by interfering during the ballot, which is completely unacceptable." It was however suspended again on July 15, with agreement on a new deal announced on July 26. Minimum hourly rates rise from £9.79 per hour (just 29p an hour above minimum wage) to £10.84, with senior drivers receiving up to £13.20 per hour. On the other side of the Pennines, Arriva's North West business was brought to a halt by an indefinite strike from July 20. Ten depots are affected by the action, with just that at Macclesfield not participating, and where local services continue to run, but not interurban service 38 to Crewe. Arriva Cymru services into Chester are also still operating, as is a shuttle for Clatterbridge Cancer Trust in Merseyside. |
