Daimler-owned bus manufacturer Evobus has announced that bus shell construction will move from Germany to Holysov in the Czech Republic as part of a massive cost-cutting programme. The switch could affect as many 1,000 Evobus jobs at the main Mannheim city bus plant and 600 more in Neu-Ulm, where Setra coaches are assembled. Parent company Daimler Truck said the transfer would save €100m (£84.2m) annually in production costs. It promised generous severance pay and early retirement schemes for workers in Germany who may lose their jobs. Trade unions and workers' council officials oppose the lay-offs and have pledged to fight the planned job cuts. |
