Besides his new Hebble history, Stuart Emmett has produced these two profiles of small South Yorkshire operators within the format of Stenlake's budget priced landscape picture albums. Not that either lacks information or detail. Some of the pictures are presented four to a spread to show the variety of fleets that both Mexborough & Swinton and Dearneways operated, and he tells their stories concisely in a series of short bullet points. Like Hebble, Mexborough & Swinton became part of the BET group and remained one of its smallest subsidiaries, latterly with management support from Yorkshire Traction. Most of its routes were confined within an area of just 6sq miles. The National Bus Company ended its glorious existence within months, transferring its routes and 40 green and cream vehicles to the red and cream fleet of Yorkshire Traction in October 1969. |
