Department for Transport (DfT) statistics showed patronage in England at 80% or better for much of November, after a downturn the previous month. However, the figures hide regional and local variations. They are derived from figures supplied by Ticketer, which although it has widespread coverage, does not include either National Express West Midlands or Stagecoach. Strikes at the latter's subsidiaries in Teeside and Yorkshire, with their impact on passenger numbers, are not therefore visible in the DfT's figures. The DfT has also released its annual bus statistics, which show that bus patronage in 2020/21 was just 1.727bn for the whole of Great Britain, a 62% reduction on the previous year. Regional figures show that the drop was greatest in South East and Eastern England, where almost 68% of passengers disappeared. In contrast, London and the North West of England both retained more than 40% of normal passenger levels. |
