Bus and coach operators in Germany are enforcing a new law which requires bus passengers to carry proof of Covid vaccination, recovery or a negative test while using public transport. The rule came into force on November 25 as the country took drastic steps to tackle a new surge of coronavirus cases. It is part of a toolbox of options passed by parliament and was due to be reviewed during December. Heavy fines are issued to those who do not comply, although the penalty amount varies among Germany's 16 federal states. Proof of a negative test result must not be older than 24 hours. Schoolchildren and minors aged under six years are exempt. Germany's vaccination rate stands at 67%, one of the lowest in Europe, and a fourth infection wave is gathering pace as the weather turns colder. |
