German government ministers have rejected calls to extend the popular nationwide flat fee ticket priced at €9 (£7.63) beyond its initial three-month run, saying the funds should be spent instead on improving services. Transport minister Volker Wissing said the scheme would be too costly to finance in the long-term. More than 21 million tickets have been sold since the measure came into force on June 1. The minister described the scheme as 'a field trial' to see if regular fares were preventing people from using public transport or whether services just needed to be more attractive in Germany where wearing anti-Covid face coverings on public transport is still mandatory. |
