Three surprises greet me at dawn in Paignton. The first is an anonymous on-street bus shelter outside the library with no stop flag, timetable or clue it is where Megabus and National Express depart. The second is a left-hand drive coach - configured for Megabus's former European operations - and the third is it arriving empty despite starting in Plymouth. Perhaps its 05:00 start or one hour detour via Torbay deters Plymothians who have a faster 08:15 direct service. I wonder how wheelchair passengers board as the driver, donning a hi-vis and hat, opens his cab window to poke booking confirmations through. He remotely opens the central kerbside exit for boarding up steps past the toilet directly onto the upper deck. I gain a grandstand view front seat with armrests, charging points, reading light, air vent, speaker and shelf whilst rubbish bags hang from aisle seats. High backs give restricted views from further back. |
