Many of us collect items of bus and coach memorabilia, often either as decoration, something to touch and conserve or even to wear. Some of you collect and lovingly restore working vehicles. But someone in Huddersfield has acquired a unique piece of Yorkshire bus manufacturing history. The gates that led to Optare's former factory in Leeds, the old Charles H Roe site in Manston Lane, Crossgates, have been salvaged and reinstalled on the outskirts of this other West Yorkshire town. Malcolm doesn't know who has bought them, but was taken by surprise when he spotted them while photographing buses on the 398 route between the town centre and the University of Huddersfield's Storthes Hall campus. Leyland closed the Roe business in 1984 and newly formed Optare (Latin for 'to choose'), then owned by its employees, resumed production the following year. Several changes of ownership later and having already opened its present factory just over the North Yorkshire border at Sherburn-in-Elmet, it locked the gates at Crossgates for the last time in October 2011. The buildings were demolished in spring 2012, ready for the site to be redeveloped as housing. Nice to see that someone is keeping the name alive in the county of its birth. |
