The Scottish Vintage Bus Museum intends to host a major two-day event in May 2025 to mark the 40th anniversary of the radical reorganisation of the state-owned Scottish Bus Group from seven to 11 operating companies in June 1985. Plans for the weekend gathering at its 42acre site at Lathalmond outside Dunfermline are at an early stage and envisage the display and operation of preserved SBG buses, sales stalls for books and models, film and slide presentations on the events of 1985, guest speakers and the participation of former employees. The restructure formed a major part of SBG's preparation for deregulation in October 1986 and marked a break away from the historic territories of its subsidiary companies to new boundaries aligned more closely with those of the regional councils that formed the top tier of Scottish local government at the time. It also adopted a new standard form of name for each of the companies, with the regional name followed by Scottish Omnibuses. The only company left unaltered by the change was Fife Scottish Omnibuses, formerly W Alexander & Sons (Fife), as its operating area was largely that administered by Fife Region. The change to Highland Scottish was relatively small, with just the loss of its Oban area (in Strathclyde Region) so it focused entirely on Highland Region. |
