Preston Corporation introduced its first buses in January 1922 and expanded their operation between 1932 and 1935 as it replaced the electric trams it had operated since 1904. Two distinguishing features were its use of letters, abbreviations of outer termini or significant corridors, instead of route numbers for 50 years until 1980, and the exclusive use of locally-manufactured Leylands for 44 years until three Bristol LHSs were sourced from another part of Leyland that built a product not available from a Lancashire factory but which had a Leyland engine. Preston went on buying bigger Leylands after that. A commendable variety of hardware - from corporation days to today's Rotala-owned Preston Bus - is shown in this route-by-route picture album, in many different locations, backgrounds and weather conditions. Much of the content is colour and most pictures are either Mike Rhodes's own work or from his collection. Ribble buses appear on jointly operated routes. |
