The scientific community has reported with high confidence that climate change will pose physical, business, security and financial risks for airports and other aviation stakeholders. A number of airports have begun to plan for a new (climate) normal and others have identified a need to do so. However, there is little guidance regarding the best means of undertaking such planning. The goal of this research is to identify current plans and practices for managing climate risks at airports. The audience for this synthesis is airport directors and theirstaffs, and other aviation stakeholders who are responsible for the national aviation system. Some of the impacts that may be associated with climate change are rising temperatures, rising sea level, changes in precipitation, changing wind patterns, unstable/unpredictable/ extremeweather, costs for mitigation and adaptation, global/local regulatory regimes, natural resources and materials, and impacts on social and political systems. These impacts will have consequences (e.g., airport closures, infrastructure damage, effects on demand at a particular airport, public health issues, irregular operations from air traffic disruptions, stranded passengers, and loss of available resources duringstorms) for the airport industry. |
