The 2010 Confederacao Nacional do Transporte (CNT) survey of the overall highway condition in Brazil indicated an improvement from previous years. The best Brazilian highways are located in the Southeast, followed by the South and Midwest regions. The Midwest and South regions are the most important soybean production and exporting areas. Half of Brazilian soybean production comes from the Midwest region and 37 percent from the South. Soybean producers in the south region have lower marketing costs than the Midwest due to its proximity to ports, more choices on transportation mode, and better road conditions. For example, transportation cost as a percentage of the total landed cost of soybean shipments to China represents 32 percent in North Mato Grosso (MT), Midwest region and 19 percent in Rio Grande do Sul (RS) and Parana (PR), Southeast region. According to the CNT, the best roads in the South of Brazil are located in RS with 66.8 percent of the roads classified as good to excellent compared to 23 percent in MT. In 2009, the average cost of shipping a metric ton of soybeans 100 miles by truck from Sorriso, North MT, to Santos was $8.15 and $8.51 from Cruz Alta, Northwest RS, to Rio Grande. |
