摘要：	Santos continuous to be the largest soybean export port, accounting for 34 percent of Brazilian exports in 2008 (Port of Santos and CONAB). Transportation costs as a percentage of total landed costs declined 13-30 percent. Farm values reached their peak in the 3rd quarter, dropping in the 4th quarter but still remaining 39-53 percent higher than the previous year. Despite the rise of over 50 percent in Mato Grosso (MT) soybean prices, producers did not realize the benefits of the increase in farm prices due to high debt and rising production and transportation costs. Truck rates increased, but not enough to offset the large drop in ocean rates to Shanghai caused by weak global demand and excess vessel capacity. In addition, uncertainties surrounding the financial markets created difficulties in securing importers trade credit, especially in shipments from Canada and South America, and increased the number of contract defaults. Vessel owner default is a continuous problem for the industry; many Japanese trading houses have established a list of approved vessel owners and operators with whom they will conduct business.
