摘要: Traffic congestion is a major headache for drivers in many cities around the world. During the period of the pandemic, traffic volumes have been reduced in many major cities around the world because of lockdown measures. At the same time, when lockdown measures have been eased traffic has been an issue in cities that would normally rely heavily on public transport. Many people have been unwilling to use public transport due to fears of COVID-19 and have used personal vehicles instead. Pandemic or not, certain cities around the world have suffered heavily from traffic congestion for many years. For example, the 2021 Traffic Index Report produced by Dutch navigation systems firm TomTom highlighted Turkey's economic centre Istanbul as having the worst traffic of any city in the world. According to the report, drivers in Istanbul lost an average of 142 work hours/year due to being stuck in traffic, an increase of 7% since 2019. The report measured 404 cities around the world in six continents and across 58 countries. Moscow came in second behind Istanbul for traffic congestion, with an average of 140 work hours lost/year and an increase of 2% compared to 2019. In third place came Kyiv with an average of 128 lost work/hours year, an increase of 396 from 2019. Bogota was fourth with an average of 126 lost work hours/year, a drop of 13% from 2019 and Mumbai was fifth with an average of 121 lost work hours/ year, a drop of 12% from 2019.
