Developing hill cities of India faces one major problem of traffic congestion that cannot be solved through traditional remedial measures such as road widening. The increase in the purchasing power of the people has resulted in an increase in the number of cars being added on the road network, on a daily basis. As a result of this, hill cities known for their clean and unpolluted air are slowly losing their charm. It becomes imperative far a new system to be introduced that not only relieves traffic congestion but also ensures that the quality of life as well as the identity of such cities is maintained. This paper takes a look at how cable cars, a technology successfully adopted in South America, are feasible in developing hill ci ties of India. The capital city of Shillong has been selected as the case study city to understand what challenges and improvements would be expected if such a system is to be adopted. |
