Asphalt is highly recyclable and the construction sector is now keen to use this material again and again, which helps to achieve sustainability targets. In the past old asphalt would be dumped at landfill, an extremely wasteful practice. However, old asphalt from worn road surfaces is now being reclaimed in increasingly large quantities. While the use of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) in mixes was linked to poor quality results in the past, employing modern plant and paving technology ensures that results can be achieved to match new materials for longevity and quality. Using additives where necessary can add to the properties of asphalt mixes and suit the use of RAP for specific requirements. The reuse of bitumen is particularly important as this is a costly material, while reusing aggregates helps reduce the quantities of fresh stone being quarried. In markets such as Europe where the permission process for new quarry operations is increasingly challenging, the need to recycle construction materials is particularly important. |
