The move to decarbonising transport is presenting new challenges for those in urban areas. While EVs and electric scooters do offer the prospect of quiet and zero emissions transport, these are not without their problems. While those EV owners with a garage or a driveway area can charge their cars away from the roadside, those who live in higher density housing face tougher challenges. Many of the new generation lighting poles now feature charging points for EVs. This has caused problems for some vehicle owners though, with EV users having to ask those with internal combustion powered vehicles to move and allow access. Pedestrian walkways at the roadside are where charging stations for EVs are often located. But if the walkways are narrow, this presents challenges to the less able, particularly the elderly and disabled. Some EV owners park their vehicles beside their homes and trail cables across walkways. Again, this presents trip hazards for the less able and unwary. Moreover, the charging cables supplied by EV firms are not inexpensive and cases of theft are increasing. In addition, provision for cyclists is often placed by the kerbside so the presence of charging cables could also provide hazards for those travelling on two wheels. |
