摘要: As society transitions to zero-carbon travel, as it must do to reach emission-reduction targets, roads will be a vital part of a thriving net-zero economy. Cutting greenhouse-gas emissions from the maintenance and construction of roads, including the use of materials such as asphalt, is key to decarbonising the road construction sector. In the UK and other European markets, an increasing number of road authorities are already taking steps to increase the use of well-established emission-reducing techniques, such as warm mix asphalt and recycling end-of-life pavement. Warm asphalt mixture is proven to reduce emissions across production and installation compared to conventional hot mixtures. For example, by using fuel oil in an asphalt plant as the primary heating fuel, reducing by 30℃ the mixture temperature, results in a saving of around 10% in fuel use3, that is around 0.9 litres per tonne of asphalt produced. This translates approximately into a 5% reduction of the overall pavement carbon footprint -from cradle to installation1 (see pie chart).
