Using ArcGIS, the DPS crash records database was queried to determine the number of fatality and incapacitating injury crashes on all public roads in South Dakota for the period January 1, 2007 through December 31, 2011. This resulted in 576 fatality crashes and 3,283 incapacitating injury crashes for a total of 3,859 fatal and incapacitating injury crashes statewide for the 5 year period. These fatality and incapacitating injury crashes will be referred to as crashes in the remainder of the report unless otherwise specified. By separating the urban crashes from rural crashes, we found that of the 3,859 total crashes in the state, 1,287 crashes occurred in urban locations and 2,572 crashes occurred at rural locations. In the urban locations, intersections were queried for the locations of the 1,287 crashes. The query produced 160 intersections where 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2 crashes occurred for the 5 year period. A total of 11 urban intersections were considered for the top 5% intersections which included intersections with only 6, 5, and 4 crashes or 6.9% of the top intersections. There is 1 location with 6 crashes, 2 locations with 5 crashes and 8 locations with 4 crashes for a total of 48 crashes. These locations and crashes are located as follows: 5 locations in Sioux Falls with a total of 22 crashes and 6 locations in Rapid City with a total of 26 crashes. In the rural areas, roadway segments were queried for the number of crashes per segment of roadway of the 2,572 crashes. The segments are defined as those sections of roadway located between intersecting roadways. The query determined segments with 2 to 16 crashes. The number of locations for the 5% report is 18 with a total of 130 crashes, which indicated 5.1% of the 2,572 crashes. |
