摘要: Using ArcGIS, the DPS crash records database was queried to determine the number of fatality and incapacitating injury crashes on all public roads in South Dakota for the period January 1, 2006 through December 31, 2010. This resulted in 647 fatality crashes and 3,445 incapacitating injury crashes for a total of 4,092 fatal and incapacitating injury crashes statewide for the 5 year period. These fatality and incapacitating injury crashes will be referred to as crashes in the remainder of the report unless otherwise specified. By separating the urban crashes from rural crashes, we found that of the 4,092 total crashes in the state, 1,345 crashes occurred in urban locations and 2,747 crashes occurred at rural locations. In the urban locations, intersections were queried for the locations of the 1,345 crashes. The query produced 171 intersections where 5, 4, 3, and 2 crashes occurred for the 5 year period. A total of 12 urban intersections were considered for the top 5% intersections which included intersections with only 5 and 4 crashes. There are 2 locations with 5 crashes and 10 locations with 4 crashes for a total of 50 crashes or 3.7% of the 1,345. These locations and crashes are located as follows: 7 locations in Sioux Falls with a total of 28 crashes, 4 locations in Rapid City with a total of 18 crashes, and 1 location in Huron with 4 crashes.
