摘要: Evidence of climate impacts on Arctic marine ecosystems is accumulating and these systems may face additional stresses from increasing anthropogenic activity due to easier access following sea ice declines. The continental shelves of the Arctic possess large petroleum reserves and industrial activities related to petroleum extraction are expected to increase in the Alaska Arctic. In response, several intensive ecological investigations of oil and gas lease sites in the Alaska Arctic have recently been undertaken. The recent declines in sea ice coverage have also helped to increase interest in establishing new shipping lanes through the Arctic, and prompted research on the impacts this vessel traffic may have on Arctic ecosystems. Ecosystem models are an effective tool in support of an ecosystem-based approach to managing marine resources and can be used to investigate ecosystem scale processes and the relative effects different stressors may have on ecosystems.
