Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation Limited (MSRDC), Govt. of Maharashtra, India has conceived India's widest Road Tunnel works in Mumbai Pune Expressway to Bypass the frequent change in alignment and high gradient at certain stretches of hilly terrain. The finished width of Tunnel is 22.326 mts and finished height of tunnel is 8.990 mt with crown having D-Shaped at the time of construction. During DPR, geotechnical investigation revealed rocks are mainly of Basalt Type. The tunnel construction methodology is extremely critical for such ultra-iarge-span tunnels (23 mts width) and cannot be determined and fixed at initial stage. The designer set a systematic theoretical basis and technical standards for construction. Designer has designed for Class-A, B, C, D Types of Rock. The methodology developed was qualitative one and based on relevant experience of the on-site technicians. During construction, various types of rocks were encountered. There were many Geological Surprises occurred during construction even after fully complying all technical specifications, observing safety needs and fulfilling codal requirements at the time of construction. |
