Amparav Landslide took place around 2:30 hrs on the morning of September 23, 2004. Amparav is situated on Rampur-Nainital (National Highway-87) before Joylikot in Kumaun Division of Uttarakhand State. This highway is important from the strategic point of view as it leads to the international borders and many major hill cities of Kumaun Garhwal. Amparav landslide was initiated at an altitude of approximately 4500 ft in jointed sandstone lying over the slip surface i.e. common bedding plane of the sandstone and claystone. Investigations revealed that there are two major Talus landslides on upperhilly areas. Interaction of the geological structures with the slope played an important role in the occurrence of the Amparav landslides. High weathering conditions in this area have also played a key role in transforming the claystone into gauge material from the parent rocks and providing the slippery surface for the jointed sandstone rock bed resting over the jointed claystone bed. Second order streams passed through the two failure zones, merging below the landslide spots, crossing National Highway-87 and finally merging with the Goula River. These streams carried huge landslide debris into the abandoned stream due to the closure of the existing stream by the uprooted footover concrete bridge. This led to the burial of seven people, houses and shops. Debris was also piledup on National Highway-87 and damaged the same. Efforts were made to study the in-depth mechanism of talus failure and provide remedial measures to avoid such failures in future. |
