The present study evaluates the rutting and fatigue potential of asphalt concrete with different types of base asphalt binders and warm mix additives. Two base asphalt binders namely, VG-30 and PMB-40 are used and three warm mix additives namely Sasobit, Evotherm, and Rediset are used in different contents to prepare 20 formulations of warm mix asphalt binder. These asphalt binders are tested to find their rheological properties. Brookfield viscometer is used to determine the viscosity of each asphalt binder at different temperatures (135℃, 150℃, and 165℃). The dynamic shear rheometer is used to obtain the performance grade parameter G~*/ Sinδ and multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR) in 10 cycles to get the percent recoveries and the non-recoverable compliances (Jnr) of each asphalt binder. All the asphalt binders were tested at five equally spaced temperatures. The MSCR test was used to determine recoveries and Jnr values at the stress level of 100 Pa and 3200 Pa. The highest recoveries and the lowest non-recoverable compliance value of asphalt binders were found for the binders with 3 percent Sasobit. The wheel tracking rut test at 60℃ and four-point bending test at 20℃ are also conducted on asphalt concrete. The result of the MSCR test is found to better correlate with rut depth than the conventional used G~*/ Sinδ parameter. Relations are also developed between the fatigue life of asphalt concrete and cumulative dissipated energy. |
