Building clean and green environment along with the application of 'smart' solutions to the cities has been the core focus of many global policies for building of smart cities. Electric Vehicles (EVs) will play a major role in transitioning towards sustainable and decarbonized mobility of smart cities. EVs are viewed as the more affordable, reliable, cleaner, and sustainable transportation alternative to conventional travel modes like Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles. The fast adoption of zero emission EVs is a matter of great significance for the overall improvement of air quality of the cities. Many exogenous and endogenous factors are responsible for the penetration of EVs. This study analyses the impact of socio-demographic factors like Age, Gender, Education Level, Income, Driving License, Vehicles owned, Number of members and working members in the household on decision of future EV adoption in city of New Delhi. The analysis reveals that the younger demography is highly inclined towards EV adoption. The more educated are also more interested in EVs compared to ICE vehicles. The study recommends few policy measures that can be applied for boosting EV penetration in the study area. The shift to EVs will boost sustainable transport and reduce the emissions and subsequently the pollution. |
