Conventional pavement is designed for design period of 15-20 years in India but it is generally found that rehabilitation requirement is after 5-7 years or earlier and premature failure occurs after construction due to use of poor mix/substandard bitumen, overloading and allowing vehicle before completing all pavement layer and lack of good quality control of construction of pavement layers/using substandard materials. Perpetual pavement is new in Indian condition and Government of India have started to construct perpetual pavement recently and there is no proper guideline for perpetual pavement presently related to quality control except tensile strain at the bottom of asphalt and compressive strain at the top of the subgrade are checked for 80 and 200 micro-strain respectively. International experiences are reviewed related materials used, aggregate grading, bitumen quality control adopted during execution and major causes of failure of perpetual pavement and compared with International Specification due to lack of Indian Standard Specification. Based on the international experiences, a preliminary guideline is formulated and presented in this paper. |
