The Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham (RPCGB), with coordination from Progress 280 and the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), initiated the current study to utilize microscopic traffic simulation to examine the effects of various alternatives on traffic flow along the U.S 280 corridor. A total of seven alternatives were analyzed. The alternatives are categorized into the following scenarios: existing conditions, urban interchange alternatives, parallel corridor alternative, at-grade improvements alternative and transit alternative. The results showed that high quality facilities such as urban interchanges improved flow along some sections of the corridor and exacerbated existing problems in other sections. Alternatives to reduce the traffic demand on U.S. 280 (parallel corridor and transit) were shown to have negligible effects on traffic operations throughout the corridor as a whole. Similarly, at-grade improvements at intersections along the corridor were to result in little corridor-level improvements. Ultimately, the results indicated that a combination of additional lanes and at-grade improvements at various locations along the corridor would yield the most travel time savings throughout the corridor. The project also showcased the use of the microscopic traffic simulation package AIMSUN and its 3-D animation capabilities. |
