In 2000, 37,409 traffic crashes resulted in the death of one or more persons. In 31%of those crashes, at least one driver or non-occupant had a BAC at or above the level of intoxication (0.10+). The preliminary National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data estimated 17,970 deaths in 2002 due to crashes involving alcohol-about 500 more than in 2001 and representing 42%of all traffic fatalities. That means nearly 18,000 of our friends and loved ones died, and not because of a terrible disease, natural causes, or terrorism. This research incorporated and taught selected transportation topics in advanced level mathematics course, MA407 (Introduction to Mathematical Modeling), and developed a mathematical model for predicting the number of weather related traffic collisions in South Carolina counties based on the concentration of registered vehicles. |
