摘要: Continuity diaphragms used on skewed bents in prestressed girder bridges cause difficulties in detailing and construction. Details for bridges with large diaphragm skew angles (>30DG) have not been a problem for LA DOTD. However, as the skew angle decreases or when the girder spacing decreases, the connection and the construction become more difficult. Even the effectiveness of the diaphragms is questionable at these high skews. Thus, the need for continuity diaphragms for skewed continuous span precast prestressed concrete girder bridges is investigated. The bridge parameters considered in this study are based on results of a survey sent to other states' bridge engineers and design of experiment techniques. The parameters include girder type, bridge skew angle, girder spacing, span length, and diaphragm skew angle. The effects of continuity diaphragms on stresses and deflections from truck and lane loading on continuous skewed bridges are evaluated and results provide a fundamental understanding of the load transfer mechanism in diaphragms of skewed bridges. The effectiveness of continuity diaphragms for skewed continuous bridges is limited. The outcome of the research will reduce the construction and maintenance costs of bridges in the state of Louisiana and the nation.
