In 1998, the Western Transportation Institute began working with the California and Oregon Departments of Tranportations (CALTRANS and ODOT, respectively) on the Rural California/Oregon Advanced Transportation Systems (COATS) project. The goal of the project was to enhance safety, improve transportation and spur economic development in the region through the use of Intellgent Transportation Systems (ITS). In 2000, the COATS Steering Committee selected the Siskiyou Pass Project as an 'Early Winner' project for immediate implementation. |
