This document constitutes the final report of the evaluation of the TravInfo field operational test. TravInfo is a regional traveler information system in operation in the San Francisco Bay Area. The focus of the evaluation was on three areas: institutional, technology, and traveler response. Data sources from field measurements and observations, focus group discussions, and traveler surveys were used in the evaluation. During the 1996-1998 test period, TravInfo was distinguished from other advanced traveler information systems (ATIS) in two areas: 1) the program was organizationally structured as a public private partnership; and 2) it featured an open architecture which provided a database that was accessible to all information service providers. The report first presents background information on the TravInfo program. This is followed by evaluations of the institutional relationships, technology, and traveler response to TravInfo. A synthesis of the three evaluations is then presented, followed by an examination of the lessons learned from the project. Recommendations and conclusions follow. |
