This paper presents the findings of a survey conducted among callers of TravInfo Traveler Advisory Telephone System (TATS). TravInfo is a Field Operational Test (FOT) of an open-access traveler information system for the San Francisco Bay Area. As part of the TravInfo FOT, a single telephone number was designated to allow travelers obtain information about traffic conditions and transit services. In operation since September 1996, TravInfo disseminates real-time traffic information and multi-modal travel options to Bay Area travelers. To evaluate the field operational test, an initial survey of TravInfo TATS callers was conducted over a two week period in April 1997. The purpose of the survey was to measure the effectiveness of TravInfo in changing traveler behavior and to assess perceived benefits to users of the service. The paper examines the call making characteristics of those who inquired about transit information. Changes in travel behavior after obtaining transit information were also investigated. An overwhelming majority of the callers were satisfied with theinformation they obtained from TravInfo. However the study showed that transit information callers were somewhat more satisfied with the quality of information than the timeliness of retrieving information. Of those who inquired about transit information, only 53.8% completed their trip in comparison with 94.3% of those who inquired about traffic information. 41.6% of those who made a trip after obtaining transit information modified their travel behavior, of which the majority changed departure time. Approximately half of transit information callers were new customers. Transit information callers value the TravInfo TATS service because it allows them to choose best route to reduce travel time and to reach destinations without getting lost. Although transit and traffic information services deal with distinctly different markets, the majority of transit callers liked easy access to TravInfo for both types of information via a single phone number. |
