TravInfo is a unique Intelligent Transportation Systems project that integrates advances in both the transportation and communications fields. TravInfo is the first project of its kind that seeks to implement an open and centralized database, the Traveler Information Center, for the collection, fusion and dissemination of real-time traveler information on all modes of transportation in a large metropolitan area. The implementation of the Traveler Information Center, made possible through advances in computer technology, serves as a model basis for the merging of the communications and transportation industries by allowing the collection of real-time traveler information and its integration with newly developed transportation technologies. This powerful combination of readily available real-time traveler information and new transportation technologies is in fact the foundation of the nascent Advanced Traveler Information Systems market. Evaluation of the Traveler Information Center will provide invaluable insight into how the fusion of information and transportation technologies is proceeding. The evaluation will provide answers to a host of issues related to the linkages between communications and transportation fields among which are: What is the functionality of the Traveler Information Center? What is the communications interface linking the Traveler Information Center with the PUB Published by: lic and private sectors? Who is mostly using a Traveler Information Center and for what type of data? Answers to such issues will not only enhance our understanding of the interlinkages between these two areas but will also serve as an experience base for future deployments of information centers in other metropolitan areas. |
