This report provides the results of an extensive laboratory investigation of a total of 15 specific issues related to DMS operations statewide. These issues were identified and approved by TxDOT project advisors responsible for DMS operations in their respective districts. Laptop computers were used to simulate DMS message displays. After each message display, participating subject drivers responded to questions designed to determine the level of recall and comprehension of die information contained in the message. Response times as well as message format/sign operating preferences were also collected from the subject drivers. The report contains specific recommendations concerning DMS issues in the following four categories:
1. communicating time and day for future roadwork to motorists,
2. motorist interpretations of specific words or phrases used on DMSs,
3. DMS operating practices, and
4. using DMSs with lane control signals.
