The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) has recently been interested in new
technologies available for earth retention systems that provide lower cost alternatives to traditional reinforced
concrete structures. This has been prompted by the need for developing creative, nontraditional solutions for
new construction initiatives and infrastructure rehabilitation projects throughout the State of Rhode Island.
This report is an important outcome of RIDOT ’ s desire to pursue innovative technologies for solving earth
retention problems more effectively and more economically.
The information contained in this report provides a broad overview of a number of alternative
retention systems for use in a variety of applications. These new approaches offer important advantages over
typical gravity wall and cast-in-place concreteretaining structure designs, such as: a) more economical systems
to design and build; b) ease of construction; c) greater durability; and d) adaptability to a wide range of
conditions and problems. In addition, these systems can often provide superior solutions to problems that
have been either difficult or impossible to solve using conventional methods. Furthermore, it has been
estimated that U.S. state DOTs can save more than $700 million annually by implementing and taking
ownership of such new technologies for earth retention structures (Barrett, 1992). This new generation of
engineered retention systems provides engineers with powerful tools for solving a variety of problems.
