The FAA’s Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) program has been tasked with
developing concepts and plans to transition today’s National Airspace System (NAS) to a
Trajectory Based Operations (TBO) system of Air Traffic Management (ATM). The goal of a TBO
system is to increase the efficiency and predictability of flight operations while maintaining
operational flexibility in an increasingly diverse air traffic system. The FAA’s NextGen
organization has published documents that provide a vision of these proposed changes 1, 2, 3 . This
vision includes transitioning to a time-based system of ATM, increasing the use of information
exchanged between air and ground systems, and taking advantage of an aircraft’s ability to fly
precise and predictable trajectories using Performance Based Navigation (PBN). |
