摘要：	Interstate highways continue to play a vital role in moving people and freight in this country. Over the past few decades, however, they have taken on an important and expanded role in facilitating travel within urban areas. They have also become central to moving freight and, as a result, to economic growth. These roles will continue to be important however, they have consequences that will challenge the federal government and state and local governments in assuring that Interstate highways continue to provide efficient travel and remain in relatively good condition. In particular, the challenges for Interstate highways include finding effective methods of easing traffic congestion, particularly in urban areas providing for efficient freight movement given increases in both passenger and freight traffic and responding to the effect of traffic on roads and bridges given the continued aging of these structures.
