An investigation was made of the technical condition of tractor-trailers, and certain behaviors and violations among the drivers, as related to the working situation and organizational conditions. A total of 3032 vehicles were stopped by inspectors from the Public Roads Administration at 24 inspection stations. The technical condition of the vehicles was checked, the vehicles were weighed, and the tachograph was controlled for violations of speed and hours-of-service regulations. The drivers filled in a questionnaire about employment and working conditions, accidents and near-miss incidents, fines, and violations. The results indicate that the drivers' experience of work stress is an important intervening variable between working conditions and the occurrence of violations and accidents. Self-reported stress was significantly related to the drivers' influence on the planning of their working day, to payment depending on load quantity of driving distance (rather than by the hour), and to a felt pressure to violate rules in order to satisfy requirements from employer or dispatcher. |
