The capability to model a large number of product variants is increasingly important for industrial companies that adapt their products to the needs of individual customers. STEP is an international effort to construct a standard methodology for modelling products. Its part Application Protocol 214 (AP 214) for automotive industry addresses the modelling of product variants, i.e., generic product structure modelling. The applicability of STEP to generic product structure modelling is not self-evident. For example, currently STEP does not include a mechanism for using classification and inheritance for modeling products even though these facilities are included in EXPRESS. They are powerful data modelling methods widely applicable to product modelling, not only to modelling of product variants. This paper addresses problems and possibilities of extending STEP in this direction, and a mechanism is outlined as a solution. |
