A review of literature about problems in the interplay between cyclists and car drivers reveals that there are problems related to their sharing the same space. Cyclists that hinder car drivers and car drivers passing cyclists at small distance also cause problems. Unclear and largely unknown give-way rules also create interplay problems, along with the fact the road users are often unaware of the problems they create for each other. Better physical facilities with separate areas for cyclists, better maintenance and more consistent and familiar traffic rules are the most important ways to improve the interaction. In addition, information measures may improve the interplay in some situations. |
