Background: The European Commission co-funded OPTIBODY project (Optimized Structural components and add-ons to improve passive safety in new Electric Light Trucks and Vans-ELTVs) is focused on ELTVs that are worldwide homologated as N1 and N2 vehicles and, in Europe, also include the L7e category. Objective: The OPTIBODY vehicle is based on a new structural concept for ELTVs composed of a chassis, a cabin and a number of specific add-ons.As seen in the results of the Euro NCAP tests, these vehicles have very high fatality ratios when impacting other vehicle categories. Results: To improve the safety of this kind of vehicle, its main chassis structure was designed and special attention was paid to the frontal add-on and the composite crash boxes designed for Vulnerable Road Users (VRU) and frontal impact protection. |
