There exists two principal shortcomings of the current bridge assessment procedures: (1) visual inspection is plagued by epistemic uncertainty and subjectivity, which results in significant variability; and (2) analytical load rating procedures are precluded for a large population of undocumented bridges. While the technological advances of the last decade have developed reliable tools for quantitative condition assessment, they currently remain cost prohibitive for widespread application. As a result, there is a need for effective, quantitative, yet practical technologies that can be adopted by bridge owners and applied in a screening capacity. The objective of this research is to develop an experimental tool capable of being employed in a widespread manner as a screening technique, and to provide quantitative data that can be correlated with bridge conditions. The experimental tool is an extension/modification of the Falling-Weight Deflectometer (FWD) technology from pavements to bridges. |
